Fort Risban

Le Fort-Risban

Dating from the end of the 16th century, this fort was constructed on the site of an old English tower called “Lancaster Tower”. Its purpose was to defend the harbour entrance. An explosion did considerable damage in 1800, and subsequently large-scale works were carried out in the first half of the 19th century. The fort was renovated and extended. It lost its military function in 1921 and was purchased by the city of Calais in 1938. Fort Risban is officially listed as a historic building. Restoration works have been carried out for several years.
