By shuttle train: Folkestone – Coquelles in 35 min.
|
Operated by Groupe Eurotunnel, the Channel Tunnel and shuttle trains (Eurotunnel Shuttle) are the fastest, simplest, most reliable and most eco-friendly way to go from England to France and vice-versa.
Upon arrival at the Eurotunnel terminals in Folkestone or Calais/Coquelles, which are directly served by motorways (M20 and A16) and reserved for tourist traffic (for trucks there is a different point of access), motorists confirm their reservation in a few seconds thanks to optical readers that recognise their number plate. They then go aboard the shuttle trains, which, besides cars, also carry motorcycles, campers and caravans.
The shuttle makes the crossing in just 35 minutes at a speed of 140 km/h, while passengers remain in their vehicles. At rush hours, up to four trains an hour leave in each direction. The shuttles are the only ones that run round the clock, 365 days a year.
The Eurotunnel transport system is exclusively fed with electric power and does not affect the marine environment. This way, the environmental impact of channel crossings is limited as much as possible.
250 million passengers and 50 million vehicles have used the Channel Tunnel since its official opening in 1994.
